Center Staff and Volunteers Potluck Lunch
12:00 PM-1:00 PM

Greetings… the official “beginning of the end of summer” has traditionally been the last week that the YCC crew is on board;  and that will be next week!  This also means that its time for the “beginning of the end of summer” Center Staff and Volunteer potluck lunch.

For those unfamiliar with this tradition, here’s the deal.  The Center’s party fund will by hamburgers, brats, hot dogs, and buns.  The maintenance crew will fire up the gas grill and cook the meat.  The “potluck” part will be to for Center staff to bring beverages, salad, chips and dessert.  We will be eating on the back porch, weather permitting, and/or in the Whittlesey room.

The potluck is scheduled for next Wednesday, August 6th , starting at noon.  Supervisors, please let your seasonals, YCC crew members and volunteers know about the potluck.   See you there!

Steve

P.S…. there may have been some confusion resulting from the Thursday morning staff meeting regarding potlucks next week.  There will also be a potluck lunch on Monday at the Center but that is for the oral history workshop participants.  Just too many potlucks!

You are invited to learn about the U.S. Geological Survey's Great Lakes Aquatic Gap Analysis Program (GAP) at a two-hour presentation that will take place in Ashland, WI, at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center on Thursday August 7, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. You can attend in-person or via the Web and teleconference.

We are considering using the Great Lakes GAP to identify priorities for our Great Lakes Fish Habitat Partnership and have asked Jana Stewart and Jim McKenna of USGS to make this presentation.

The Great Lakes Aquatic GAP Program is evaluating the biological diversity of aquatic species and their habitats, and identifying gaps in the distribution and protection of these species and their habitats within the Great Lakes basin. It combines aquatic species distribution data with habitat spatial data layers to conduct analysis of habitat conditions and species diversity. The information will provide managers, planners, scientists, and policy makers with the information they need to identify priority areas for conservation before a species is threatened or endangered.

Below is the agenda and information you will need if you wish to join us from the comfort of you office via WebEx. Please note that you should set up the program the previous day to ensure it works.

For information on the meeting, feel free to contact me. For information on Aquatic GAP, contact Jana Stewart at: 608-821-3855 email: jsstewar@usgs.gov

King Corn
7:00 PM-8:30 PM (Theater)
“King Corn: You are What You Eat” is an 88-minute, feature documentary film about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm.
This program is sponsored by the "Beyond Growth" study circle of the Alliance for Sustainability and will take place in the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center's theater at 6:00 p.m. on, Wednesday, July 16th

From 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. to show documentaries on various environmental issues and have audience comments, reactions, and discussion.

Subject: Bus tour August

Hi Rose/Pam

Had a call yesterday, bus tour coming August 28th at 9:00.   45-50 people. Stay about 1.5 hours. Would like to see on the edge of gitchigame if theatre is available.

Would like coffee available, tour director will pay. He also asked if we could have pastries or cookies available, he would pay, I told him we usually don’t do that, but he is going to call closer to the date and recheck.
